General Function

Responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds.                                                                                                                                                              Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  • Perform grounds keeping and building maintenance duties.
  • Cut lawn using hand, power or riding mower and trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls.
  • Apply pesticide to rid grounds of pests such as mosquitos, wasps, ticks, and others.
  • Apply fertilizer to ground to enhance growth.
  • Shovel snow from walkways and sprinkle ice down to keep people from falling.
  • Sweep walkway of debris.
  • Cut down tree limbs that are posing a danger.
  • Trim shrubs and pull weeds.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in grounds-keeping.
  • Rake, mulch, and prune the grounds as needed.
  • Follow all OSHA safety guidelines to include personal protective equipment.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

Previous experience grounds maintenance experience preferred.                                                                                                                            

Physical Requirements  

  • Ability to lift and carry grounds keeping supplies and equipment weighting up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on narrow, slippery surfaces on a daily basis.
  • Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual, electrically-powered and/or gasoline-powered grounds keeping equipment and machines.
  • Requires the ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stars or by climbing ladders to a height of 25 feet (e.g. for tree trimming).
  • Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily out-of-doors, year-round.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures and weather conditions, exposure to dust, controlled and hazardous substances, pesticides, herbicides and gases moving machinery parts and heavy equipment.
  • Exposure to various insect and snake bites.
  • Normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, corrected hearing and vision to a normal range and able to verbally communicate.
